Eye-catching in their design and translucence, these cups and saucers revive a Middle Eastern tradition of serving coffee in glass vessels. With the same painstaking care that goes into crafting Riedel wine glasses comes this pair of perfectly executed espresso cups and saucers, shaped in the ideal manner to enhance the aroma and view the rich color of this hot beverage. As with Riedel wine glasses, these espresso cups are formed from liquid glass infused with 24-percent lead crystal. The glass is carefully cooled to room temperature so there are no areas of tension that can potentially crack when filled with hot coffee. It is then fire-polished to produce a lustrous shine and to melt the seams caused by the molds. This espresso set's retro 1920s design is functional as well as sophisticated. The cups each hold a single shot of Italian-style espresso and feature a straight cylindrical shape, which intensifies coffee aromas as opposed to traditional cups with bottoms that are smaller than their rims. Two sets of etched stripes along the glasses' sides further suggest Art Deco styling and are solely for show. The arching, ridged half-circle handles are beautiful in appearance but are more than ornamental; the ridges have the purpose of providing a stable grip and remaining cool when filled with hot espresso. Oval saucers measure 4 by 4-7/8 inches and have smooth, polished lines that correspond with the cup design. The saucers have ridged centers that imitate the etching on the handles. Saucers are also notched at one end to lock the handle in place and keep the cup from tipping or spilling when being carried. They make a wonderful gift for the passionate espresso drinker.
