    PREVIOUS CHAPTER - NEXT CHAPTER - HELP

      1 The rulers, voluntary men, and the tenth man chosen by lot,
        dwell at Jerusalem.
     3 A catalogue of their names.
    20 The residue dwell in other cities.

    VERSE 1
    - the rulers.
       * Ne 7:4,5 De 17:8,9 Ps 122:5
    - cast lots.
      Jerusalem certainly had many inhabitants at this time, but not
      sufficient to preserve the city, which was now encompassed
      with a wall, the building of which was going on fast.
      Nehemiah, therefore, obliged one-tenth of the country people
      to come and dwell in it, that the population might be
      sufficient for the defence of the city. Some volunteered
      their services, which was at that time considered a sacrifice
      to patriotism; as Jerusalem then afforded very few advantages,
      and was a place of considerable danger: hence "the people
      blessed them that willingly offered themselves."

       * Ne 10:34 Jos 18:10 1Ch 26:13 Pr 16:33 Ac 1:24
    - one of ten.
       * Jud 20:9,10
    - the holy.
       * :18 Isa 48:2; 52:1 Mt 4:5; 27:53

    VERSE 2
     - blessed.
       * De 24:13 Job 29:13; 31:20
    - willingly.
       * Jud 5:9 2Co 8:16,17

    VERSE 3
     - Now.
      There is a good deal of difference between this enumeration
      and that in Chronicles; as this comprehends not only those who
      came first with Zerubbabel, but also those who came with Ezra
      and Nehemiah: see on 1 Ch 18 9:18.

    - the chief.
       * Ne 7:6 Ezr 2:1
    - Israel.
       * Ne 7:73 1Ch 9:1-3 Ezr 2:70
    - Nethinims.
       * Ezr 2:43,55
    - the children.
       * Ne 7:57-60 Ezr 2:55-58

    VERSE 4
     - dwelt.
       * 1Ch 9:3,4-9
    - Perez.
      The variation of Pharez and Perez is only found in the
      translation; the original being uniformly [Perets
      <\\S#6557h\\>.]

       * Ge 38:29 Ru 4:18
    - Pharez.
       * Mt 1:3 Lu 3:33
    - Phares.

    VERSE 5
     - Col-hozeh.
       * Ne 3:15
    - Shiloni.
      Some suppose Shiloni to be the name of a man; others derive it
      from Shiloh, the city so called; and others derive it from
      Shelah, son of Judah.

       * Ge 38:5
    - Shelah.
       * Nu 26:20
    - Shelanites.
       * 1Ch 4:21; 9:5

    VERSE 6

    VERSE 7
     - the sons.
       * 1Ch 9:7-9
    - Joed.
      It is probable that Joed was also called Hodaviah, and that
      Pedaiah had also the name of Hasenuah.

    VERSE 8
     - Gabbai. i.e., exactor of tribute; collective. Sallai.
      i.e., lifted up of the Lord.
       * Ne 12:20

    VERSE 9
     - Judah.
       * 1Ch 9:7
    - Hodaviah.  Hasenuah.

    VERSE 10
     - Jedaiah.
      One of Dr. Kennicott's MSS. omits, [bˆn <\\S#1121h\\>,]
      {ben,} "son of," and reads "Jedaiah, Joiarib, Jachin:" which
      is nearly that of the parallel place. Joiarib, [Y"wyƒrŒyb
      <\\S#3114h\\>,] is merely a contracted form of [Yeh"wyƒrŒyb
      <\\S#3080h\\>,] Jehoiarib, by the elision of [Hˆ',] {hay.}

       * Ne 7:39; 12:19 1Ch 9:10
    - Jehoiarib.
       * Ezr 2:36; 8:16
    - Joiarib.
       * Ne 12:6

    VERSE 11
     - Seraiah.
      Seraiah probably had also the name of Azariah.

       * 1Ch 6:7-14; 9:11
    - Azariah.
       * Ezr 7:1-5
    - the ruler.
      He had the command over all secular matters; as the high
      priest had over all those which were spiritual.

       * Nu 3:32 1Ch 9:1 2Ch 19:11; 31:13 Ac 5:24

    VERSE 12
     - Adaiah.
       * 1Ch 9:12,13

    VERSE 13
     - Amashai. i.e., burdensome; burden borne of the Lord; people
      of my spoilers; gift of the people. <\\S#6023h\\>.
    - Ahasai. i.e., possessor of God; protector; my possessions.
       * :13

    VERSE 14
     - of one of the great men. or, of Haggedolim.
       * :14

    VERSE 15
     - Shemaiah.
       * 1Ch 9:14,19

    VERSE 16
     - Shabbethai.
       * Ne 8:7
    - had the oversight of. Heb. were over.
       * 1Ch 26:20
    - outward.
      Calmet supposes they provided the victuals for the priests,
      the victims for the sacrifices, the sacerdotal vestments, the
      sacred vessels, and other necessaries for the service of the
      temple.

       * Ac 6:2,3

    VERSE 17
     - Zabdi.
      In the parallel passage, instead of Zichri, many manuscripts
      have Zabdi, as here: he is also called Zaccur.

       * Ne 10:12 1Ch 9:15
    - Zichri.  to begin.
       * Ne 12:8,31 1Ch 16:4,41; 25:1-6
    - thanksgiving.
