Adam Clarke's Bible Commentary Verse 6. And her daughters] The places dependent on Tyre. As there were two places called Tyre, one on the main land, and the other on a rock in the sea, opposite to that on the main land, sometimes the one seems to be spoken of, and sometimes the other. That on the land, Palaetyre, was soon taken; but that in the sea cost Nebuchadnezzar thirteen years of siege and blockade. The two formed only one city, and one state.
Matthew Henry Commentary
- A history of the apostacy of God's people from him, and the aggravatio thereof.
In this parable, Samaria and Israel bear the name Aholah, "her ow tabernacle;" because the places of worship those kingdoms had, were of their own devising. Jerusalem and Judah bear the name of Aholibah, "m tabernacle is in her," because their temple was the place which God himself had chosen, to put his name there. The language and figures ar according to those times. Will not such humbling representations of nature keep open perpetual repentance and sorrow in the soul, hidin pride from our eyes, and taking us from self-righteousness? Will it no also prompt the soul to look to God continually for grace, that by his Holy Spirit we may mortify the deeds of the body, and live in holy conversation and godliness _________________________________________________
