King James Bible - 1 John 5:20

And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

World English Bible

We know that the Son of God has come, and has given us an understanding, that we know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

Douay-Rheims - 1 John 5:20

And we know that the Son of God is come: and he hath given us understanding that we may know the true God, and may be in his true Son. This is the true God and life eternal.

Webster's Bible Translation

And we know that the Son of God hath come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

VERSE (20) -
:1; 4:2,14

SEV Biblia, Chapter 5:20

Pero sabemos que el Hijo de Dios es venido, y nos ha dado entendimiento; para conocer al que es verdadero; y estamos en el verdadero, en su Hijo Jess, el Cristo. Este es el verdadero Dios, y la vida eterna.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - 1 John 5:20

Verse 20. We know that the Son of
God is come] In the flesh, and has made his soul an offering for sin; and hath given us an understanding - a more eminent degree of light than we ever enjoyed before; for as he lay in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him unto us; and he hath besides given us a spiritual understanding, that we may know him who is true, even the TRUE GOD, and get eternal life from him through his Son, IN whom we are by faith, as the branches in the vine, deriving all our knowledge, light, life, love, and fruitfulness from him. And it is through this revelation of Jesus that we know the ever blessed and glorious Trinity; and the Trinity, Father, Word, and Holy Ghost, in the eternal, undivided unity of the ineffable Godhead.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 18-21 - All
mankind are divided into two parties or dominions; that whic belongs to God, and that which belongs to the wicked one. Tru believers belong to God: they are of God, and from him, and to him, and for him; while the rest, by far the greater number, are in the power of the wicked one; they do his works, and support his cause. This genera declaration includes all unbelievers, whatever their profession station, or situation, or by whatever name they may be called. The So leads believers to the Father, and they are in the love and favour of both; in union with both, by the indwelling and working of the Holy Spirit. Happy are those to whom it is given to know that the Son of God is come, and to have a heart to trust in and rely on him that is true May this be our privilege; we shall thus be kept from all idols an false doctrines, and from the idolatrous love of worldly objects, an be kept by the power of God, through faith, unto eternal salvation. To this living and true God, be glory and dominion for ever and ever Amen __________________________________________________________________

20. An understanding (dianoian). Only here in John's writings. The faculty of understanding. See on
Luke i. 51. Westcott remarks that nouns which express intellectual powers are rare in the writings of John. We may know (ginwskomen). Apprehend progressively. Compare John xvii. 3.

Him that is true (ton alhqinon). Compare Apoc. iii. 7, 14; vi. 10. On true, see on John i. 9. "God very strangely condescends indeed in making things plain to me, actually assuming for the time the form of a man, that I at my poor level may better see Him. This is my opportunity to know Him. This incarnation is God making Himself accessible to human thought - God opening to man the possibility of correspondence through Jesus Christ. And this correspondence and this environment are those I seek. He Himself assures me, 'This is life eternal, that they might know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent.' Do I not now discern the deeper meaning in Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent? Do I not better understand with what vision and rapture the profoundest of the disciples exclaims, 'The Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we might know Him that is true?'" (Drummond, "Natural Law in the Spiritual World").

This. God the Father. Many, however, refer it to the Son.

Eternal life. See on i. 2. 69
