¶ Y salió Amán aquel día contento y alegre de corazón; pero cuando vio a Mardoqueo a la puerta del rey, que no se levantaba ni se movía de su lugar, se llenó de ira contra Mardoqueo.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Esther 5:9

Verse 9. That he stood not up, nor moved for him] This was certainly carrying his integrity or inflexibility to the highest pitch. But still we are left to conjecture that some reverence was required, which Mordecai could not conscientiously pay.

Ver. 9. Then went Haman forth that day, joyful, and with a glad heart , etc.] From court to his own house but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king’s gate, that he stood not up, nor moved for him ; did not show him the least degree even of civil respect; which he refused to do, partly lest it should be interpreted an adoration of him, and partly because it was well known to him he had formed a scheme for the destruction of him and all his people; and the rather he refused it to him, as Esther was about to make intercession with the king to revoke his decree, of the success of which he had no doubt; and therefore had nothing to fear from him, but treated him with the utmost contempt, as he deserved: he was full of wrath against Mordecai ; it was a sad mortification to him, and a great allay of that joy and elation of mind on account of the favour he was in; not with the king only, but the queen also, as he imagined.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 9-14 - This account of Haman is a comment upon Pr 21:24. Self-admirers an self-flatterers are really self-deceivers. Haman, the higher he is lifted up, the more impatient he is of contempt, and the more enrage at it. The affront from Mordecai spoiled all. A slight affront, which humble man would scarcely notice, will torment a proud man, even to madness, and will mar all his comforts. Those disposed to be uneasy will never want something to be uneasy at. Such are proud men; thoug they have much to their mind, if they have not all to their mind, it is as nothing to them. Many call the proud happy, who display pomp an make a show; but this is a mistaken thought. Many poor cottagers fee far less uneasiness than the rich, with all their fancied advantage around them. The man who knows not Christ, is poor though he be rich because he is utterly destitute of that which alone is true riches __________________________________________________________________
