Adam Clarke's Bible Commentary Verse 2. An end, the end is come] Instead of Åqh ab Åq kets ba hakkets, one MS. of Kennicott's, one of De Rossi's, and one of my own, read Åqh ab ab Åq kets ba, ba hakkets,"The end cometh, come is the end." This reading is supported by all the ancient Versions, and is undoubtedly genuine. The end COMETH: the termination of the Jewish state is coming, and while I am speaking, it is come. The destruction is at the door. The later hand, who put the vowel points to the ancient MS.
that has the above reading, did not put the points to the flrst ab ba, but struck his pen gently across it, and by a mark in the margin intimated that it should be blotted out. All my ancient MSS. were without the points originally; but they have been added by modern hands, with a different ink; and they have in multitudes of instances corrected, or rather changed, important readings, to make them quadrate with the masora. But the original reading, in almost every case, is discernible.
The end is come upon the four corners of the land.] This is not a partial calamity; it shall cover and sweep the whole land. The cup of your iniquity is full, and my forbearing is at an end. This whole chapter is poetical.
Matthew Henry Commentary
- A type of hair, showing the judgments about to come upon the Jews (Ezek. 5:1-4) These awful judgments are declared. (Ezek. 5:5-17)
Ezek. 5:1-4 The prophet must shave off the hair of his head and beard which signifies God's utter rejecting and abandoning that people. On part must be burned in the midst of the city, denoting the multitude that should perish by famine and pestilence. Another part was to be cu in pieces, representing the many who were slain by the sword. Anothe part was to be scattered in the wind, denoting the carrying away of some into the land of the conqueror, and the flight of others into the neighbouring countries for shelter. A small quantity of the thir portion was to be bound in his shirts, as that of which he is very careful. But few were reserved. To whatever refuge sinners flee, the fire and sword of God's wrath will consume them.
Ezek. 5:5-17 The sentence passed upon Jerusalem is very dreadful, the manner of expression makes it still more so. Who is able to stand in God's sight when he is angry? Those who live and die impenitent, wil perish for ever unpitied; there is a day coming when the Lord will no spare. Let not persons or churches, who change the Lord's statutes expect to escape the doom of Jerusalem. Let us endeavour to adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. Sooner or later God's wor will prove itself true _________________________________________________
