And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

Verse 6. Joseph was the governor] fyl shallit, an intendant, a protector, from fl skalat, to be over as a protector; hence µyfl shelatim, shields, or arms for protection and defense, 2 Samuel viii. 7; and wfl shilton, power and authority, Eccles. viii. 4, 8; and hence the Arabic sultan, a lord, prince, or king, from salata, he obtained and exerciseddominion, he ruled. Was it not from this very circumstance, Joseph being shallit, that all the Mohammedan governors of Egypt, &c., took the title of sultan? Bowed down themselves before him] Thus fulfilling the prophetic dream, chap. xxxvii. 7, 8, which they had taken every precaution to render null and void. But there is neither might nor counsel against the Lord.
Verses 1-6 - Jacob saw the corn his neighbours had bought in Egypt, and brough home. It is a spur to exertion to see others supplied. Shall others ge food for their souls, and shall we starve while it is to be had? Havin discovered where help is to be had, we should apply for it withou delay, without shrinking from labour, or grudging expense, especiall as regards our never-dying souls. There is provision in Christ; but we must come to him, and seek it from him.
