King James Bible - Hosea 7:14

And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me.

World English Bible

They haven't cried to me with their heart, but they howl on their beds. They assemble themselves for grain and new wine. They turn away from me.

Douay-Rheims - Hosea 7:14

And they have not cried to me with their heart, but they howled in their beds: they have thought upon wheat and wine, they are departed from me.

Webster's Bible Translation

And they have not cried to me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me.

SEV Biblia, Chapter 7:14

Y no clamaron a mí con su corazón cuando aullaron sobre sus camas; para el trigo y el mosto se congregaron; se rebelaron contra mí.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Hosea 7:14

Verse 14. They have not
cried unto me with their heart] They say they have sought me, but could not find me; that they have cried unto me, but I did not answer. I know they have cried, yea, howled; but could I hear them when all was forced and hypocritical, not one sigh coming from their heart? They assemble themselves for corn and wine] In dearth and famine they call and howl: but they assemble themselves, not to seek ME, but to invoke their false gods for corn and wine.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 14. And they have not
cried unto me with their heart , etc.] In their distress, indeed, they cried unto the Lord, and said they repented of their sins, and promised reformation, and made a show of worshipping God; as invocation is sometimes put for the whole worship of God; but then this was not heartily, but hypocritically; their hearts and their mouths did not go together, and therefore was not reckoned prayer; nothing but howling, as follows: when they howled upon their beds ; lying sick or wounded there; or, as some, in their idol temples, those beds of adultery, where they pretended to worship God by them, and to pray to him through them; but such idolatrous prayers were no better than the howlings of clogs to him; even though they expressed outwardly their cries with great vehemency, as the word used denotes, having one letter more in it than common: they assemble themselves for corn and wine : either at their banquets, to feast upon them, as Aben Ezra; or to the markets, to buy them, as Kimchi suggests; or rather to their idol temples, to deprecate a famine, and to pray for rain and fruitful seasons; or if they gather together to pray to the Lord, it is only for carnal and worldly things; they only seek themselves, and their own interest, and not the glory of God, and ask for these things, to consume them on their lust. The Septuagint version is, “for corn and wine they were cut”, or cut themselves, as Baal’s priests did, when they cried to him, ( 1 Kings 18:28); and Theodoret here observes, that they performed the Heathen rites, and in idol temples made incisions on their bodies: [and] they rebel against me : not only flee from him transgress his laws but cast off all allegiance to him and take up arms, and commit hostilities against him. The Targum joins this with the preceding clause, “because of the multitude of corn and wine which they have gathered they have rebelled against my word;” and to the same sense Jarchi; thus, Jeshurun waxed fat and kicked.

Matthew Henry Commentary

An exhortation to repentance. (Hos. 6:1-3)
Israel's instability an breach of the covenant. (Hos. 6:4-11)

Hos. 6:1-3 Those who have gone from God by consent, and in a body drawing one another to sin, should, by consent and in a body, return to him, which will be for his glory, and their good. It will be of grea use for support under afflictions, and to encourage our repentance, to keep up good thoughts of God, and of his purposes and design concerning us. Deliverance out of trouble should be to them as lif from the dead. God will revive them: the assurance of this shoul engage them to return to him. But this seems to have a furthe reference to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Let us admire the wisdo and goodness of God, that when the prophet foretold the deliverance of the church out of her troubles, he should point out our salvation by Christ; and now these words are fulfilled in the resurrection of Christ, it confirms our faith, that this is He that should come and we are to look for no other. Here is a precious blessing promised; this is life eternal, to know God. The returns of the favour of God are secure to us as firmly as the return of the morning after a dark night. He shall come to us as the latter and former rain unto the earth, whic refreshes it, and makes it fruitful. The grace of God in Christ is bot the latter and the former rain; and by it the good work of ou fruit-bearing is begun and carried on. And as the Redeemer was raise from the grave, so will He revive the hearts and hopes of all tha trust in him. The feeblest glimpse of hope in his word, is a sure earnest of increasing light and comfort, which shall be attended with purifying, comforting grace that makes fruitful.

Hos. 6:4-11 Sometimes Israel and Judah seemed disposed to repent unde their sufferings, but their goodness vanished like the empty mornin cloud, and the early dew, and they were as vile as ever. Therefore the Lord sent awful messages by the prophets. The word of God will be the death either of the sin or of the sinner. God desired mercy rather tha sacrifice, and that knowledge of him which produces holy fear and love This exposes the folly of those who trust in outward observances, to make up for their want of love to God and man. As Adam broke the covenant of God in paradise, so Israel had broken his nationa covenant, notwithstanding all the favours they received. Judah also wa ripe for Divine judgments. May the Lord put his fear into our hearts and set up his kingdom within us, and never leave us to ourselves, no suffer us to be overcome by temptation __________________________________________________________________
