Clarke's Bible Commentary - Genesis 30:18

Verse 18.
God hath given me my hire] yrk¨ sechari. And she called his name Issachar, rk¨¨y , This word is compounded of ¨y yesh, IS, and rk¨ sachar, WAGES, from rk¨ sachar, to content, satisfy, saturate; hence a satisfaction or compensation for work done, &c.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 14-24 - The desire, good in itself, but often too great and irregular, of being the mother of the
promised Seed, with the honour of having man children, and the reproach of being barren, were causes of thi unbecoming contest between the sisters. The truth appears to be, tha they were influenced by the promises of God to Abraham; whose posterit were promised the richest blessings, and from whom the Messiah was to descend.
