    Therefore the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.

    World English Bible

    The king said to Shimei, "You shall not die." The king swore to him.

    John Gill's Bible Commentary

    Ver. 23. Therefore the king said unto Shimei, thou shalt not     die , etc.] This day by my hands, or order, or by the sword, ( 1 Kings 2:8); and the king sware unto him ; that he should not die for that offence, or for that only; but if he committed a new one, this oath was no longer binding on him, and not at all upon his heir and successor.

    Matthew Henry Commentary

    Verses 16-23 - Those who now slight and     abuse the Son of David, would be glad to make their peace when he shall come in his glory; but it will be too late Shimei lost no time. His abuse had been personal, and with the usua right feeling of good men, David could more easily forgive it.
