King James Bible - Nehemiah 9:17

And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.

World English Bible

and refused to obey, neither were they mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but hardened their neck, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and didn't forsake them.

Douay-Rheims - Nehemiah 9:17

And they would not hear, and they remembered not thy wonders which thou hadst done for them. And they hardened their necks, and gave the head to return to their bondage, as it were by contention. But thou, a forgiving God, gracious, and merciful, longsuffering, and full of compassion, didst not forsake them.

Webster's Bible Translation

And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst perform among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.

SEV Biblia, Chapter 9:17

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Nehemiah 9:17

Verse 17. And in their rebellion
appointed a captain] This clause, read according to its order in the Hebrew text, is thus: And appointed a captain to return to their bondage in their rebellion. But it is probable that µyrmb bemiryam, in their rebellion, is a mistake for µyrxmb bemitsrayim, in Egypt. This is the reading of seven of Kennicott's and Deuteronomy Rossi's MSS., the Neapolitan edition of the Hagiographa, and the Septuagint. It is also the reading in Num. xiv. 4. The clause should undoubtedly be read, They appointed a captain to return to their bondage in EGYPT.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 17. And refused to obey , etc.] Though exhorted,
admonished, and threatened, such was their obstinacy: neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them ; in delivering them at the Red sea, in raining manna about them, and giving them water out of the rock: but hardened their necks ; see the preceding verse: and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage ; they not only proposed it, but determined upon it, which is reckoned the same as if they had done it, (see Numbers 14:4), but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness ; as he had proclaimed his name before Moses, and as the whole of his conduct towards the people of Israel abundantly shewed, (see Exodus 34:6,7) and forsookest them not ; when in the wilderness, where otherwise they must have perished, but still fed and protected them, notwithstanding their provocations.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 4-38 - The summary of their prayers we have here upon
record. Much more, n doubt, was said. Whatever ability we have to do any thing in the way of duty, we are to serve and glorify God according to the utmost of it When confessing our sins, it is good to notice the mercies of God, tha we may be the more humbled and ashamed. The dealings of the Lord showe his goodness and long-suffering, and the hardness of their hearts. The testimony of the prophets was the testimony of the Spirit in the prophets, and it was the Spirit of Christ in them. They spake as the were moved by the Holy Ghost, and what they said is to be receive accordingly. The result was, wonder at the Lord's mercies, and the feeling that sin had brought them to their present state, from whic nothing but unmerited love could rescue them. And is not their conduc a specimen of human nature? Let us study the history of our land, an our own history. Let us recollect our advantages from childhood, an ask what were our first returns? Let us frequently do so, that we ma be kept humble, thankful, and watchful. Let all remember that pride an obstinacy are sins which ruin the soul. But it is often as hard to persuade the broken-hearted to hope, as formerly it was to bring the to fear. Is this thy case? Behold this sweet promise, A God ready to pardon! Instead of keeping away from God under a sense of unworthiness let us come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. He is a God ready to pardon __________________________________________________________________
