    King James Bible - 1 Corinthians 9:13

Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the alter are partakers with the alter?

    World English Bible

Don't you know that those who serve around sacred things eat from the things of the temple, and those who wait on the altar have their portion with the altar?

    Douay-Rheims - 1 Corinthians 9:13

Know you not, that they who
work in the holy place, eat the things that are of the holy place; and they that serve the altar, partake with the altar?

    Webster's Bible Translation

Do ye not know that they who minister about holy things live from the things of the temple, and they who wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

    SEV Biblia, Chapter 9:13

¿No sabis que los que obran en lo sagrado, comen del santuario; y que los que sirven al altar, del altar participan?

    Clarke's Bible Commentary - 1 Corinthians 9:13

    Verse 13. They which
minister about holy things] All the officers about the temple, whether priests, Levites, Nethinim, &c., had a right to their support while employed in its service. The priests partook of the sacrifices; the others had their maintenance from tithes, first fruits, and offerings made to the temple; for it was not lawful for them to live on the sacrifices. Hence the apostle makes the distinction between those who minister about holy things and those who wait at the altar.

    Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 1-14 - It is not new for a
minister to meet with unkind returns for good-wil to a people, and diligent and successful services among them. To the cavils of some, the apostle answers, so as to set forth himself as a example of self-denial, for the good of others. He had a right to marr as well as other apostles, and to claim what was needful for his wife and his children if he had any, from the churches, without labourin with his own hands to get it. Those who seek to do our souls good should have food provided for them. But he renounced his right, rathe than hinder his success by claiming it. It is the people's duty to maintain their minister. He may wave his right, as Paul did; but thos transgress a precept of Christ, who deny or withhold due support.

    Robertson's NT Word Studies

9:13 {Sacred things} (ta hiera). {Of the temple} (tou hierou). Play on the same word hierou (sacred). See #Nu 18:8-20 for the details. this is a very pertinent illustration. {They which wait upon the altar} (hoi twi qusiasteriwi paredreuontes). Old word paredreuw, to sit beside, from par--edros, like Latin _assidere_, and so constant attendance. Only here in the N.T. Locative case qusiasteriwi, late word found so far only in LXX, Philo, Josephus, N.T., and ecclesiastical writers. See on Mt 5:23.
