    King James Bible - 2 Samuel 23:17

And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men.

    World English Bible

He said, "Be it far from me, Yahweh, that I should do this! Isn't it the blood of the
men who went in jeopardy of their lives?" Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things.

    Douay-Rheims - 2 Samuel 23:17

Saying: The Lord be merciful to me, that I may not do this: shall I drink the blood of these
men that went, and the peril of their lives? therefore he would not drink. These things did these three mighty men.

    Webster's Bible Translation

And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the
men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men.

    SEV Biblia, Chapter 23:17

Lejos sea de mí, oh SEÑOR, que yo haga esto. ¿He de beber yo la sangre de los varones que fueron con peligro de su vida? Y no quiso beberla. Estos tres valientes hicieron esto.

    John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 17. And he said, be it
far from me, O Lord, that one should do this , etc.] Drink of the water these men had brought him: [is not this] the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives ? who risked the shedding of their blood, and went in danger of their lives to get it: therefore he would not drink it : some compare with this the story of Alexander to whom a vessel of water was offered when in extreme thirst, which he refused, because he could not bear to drink it alone, and so small a quantity could not be divided among all about him; but the reasons are not the same: these things did these three mighty men ; which made them very famous.

    Matthew Henry Commentary

    Verses 8-39 -
David once earnestly longed for the water at the well of Bethlehem. I seems to be an instance of weakness. He was thirsty; with the water of that well he had often refreshed himself when a youth, and it wa without due thought that he desired it. Were his valiant men so forwar to expose themselves, upon the least hint of their prince's mind, an so eager to please him, and shall not we long to approve ourselves to our Lord Jesus, by ready compliance with his will, as shown us by his word, Spirit, and providence? But David poured out the water as drink-offering to the Lord. Thus he would cross his own foolish fancy and punish himself for indulging it, and show that he had sobe thoughts to correct his rash ones, and knew how to deny himself. Di David look upon that water as very precious which was got at the hazar of these men's blood, and shall not we much more value those benefit for purchasing which our blessed Saviour shed his blood? Let all bewar of neglecting so great salvation __________________________________________________________________
