    King James Bible - 2 Kings 4:40

So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.

    World English Bible

So they poured out for the
men to eat. It happened, as they were eating of the stew, that they cried out, and said, "Man of God, there is death in the pot!" They could not eat of it.

    Douay-Rheims - 2 Kings 4:40

And they poured it out for their companions to eat: and when they had tasted of the pottage, they cried out, saying: Death is in the
pot, O man of God. And they could not eat thereof.

    Webster's Bible Translation

So they poured out for the
men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat of it.

    :9; 1:9,11,13 De 33:1 1Ki 17:18

    SEV Biblia, Chapter 4:40

Y dio de comer a los varones; pero sucedió que comiendo ellos de aquel guisado, dieron voces, diciendo: ¡Varón de Dios, la muerte en la olla! Y no lo pudieron comer.

    Clarke's Bible Commentary - 2 Kings 4:40

    Verse 40. There is
death in the pot.] As if they had said, "We have here a deadly mixture; if we eat of it, we shall all die."

    John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 40. So they poured out for the
men to eat , etc.] When the pottage was boiled, they poured it out into dishes or basins, for the sons of the prophets to eat: and it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot ; poison, the cause of death; the pottage was so exceeding bitter, that they concluded there must be some poisonous herb in it; and coloquintida is so bitter, that it is called “the gall of the earth”: and they could not eat thereof : they stopped eating, it being so very disagreeable, and, as they supposed, dangerous.

    Matthew Henry Commentary

    Verses 38-44 - There was a
famine of bread, but not of hearing the word of God, for Elisha had the sons of the prophets sitting before him, to hear his wisdom. Elisha made hurtful food to become safe and wholesome. If mess of pottage be all our dinner, remember that this great prophet ha no better for himself and his guests. The table often becomes a snare and that which should be for our welfare, proves a trap: this is a goo reason why we should not feed ourselves without fear. When we ar receiving the supports and comforts of life, we must keep up a expectation of death, and a fear of sin. We must acknowledge God' goodness in making our food wholesome and nourishing; I am the Lor that healeth thee. Elisha also made a little food go a great way Having freely received, he freely gave. God has promised his church that he will abundantly bless her provision, and satisfy her poor with bread, Ps 132:15; whom he feeds, he fills; and what he blesses, come to much. Christ's feeding his hearers was a miracle far beyond this but both teach us that those who wait upon God in the way of duty, ma hope to be supplied by Divine Providence __________________________________________________________________
