SEV Biblia, Chapter 1:47

Jess vio venir hacía sí a Natanael, y dijo de l: He aquí un verdadero israelita, en el cual no hay engao.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - John 1:47

Verse 47. Behold an Israelite indeed] A worthy descendant of the
patriarch Jacob, who not only professes to believe in Israel's God, but who worships him in sincerity and truth, according to his light.

In whom is no guile!] Deceitfulness ever has been, and still is, the deeply marked characteristic of the Jewish people. To find a man, living in the midst of so much corruption, walking in uprightness before his Maker, was a subject worthy the attention of God himself. Behold this man! and, while you see and admire, imitate his conduct.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 47. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him , etc.] For notwithstanding his prejudices, he was a man of so much uprightness and honesty, that he thought Philips request was very reasonable; and that it was but right, and fair, that he should see, and hear, and judge, for himself, whether the person Philip spoke of was the Messiah, or not; and therefore he came along with him; and as he was coming, Jesus saw him, who knew all that had passed between him and Philip: and saith of him ; to those that were standing by him, and in the hearing of Nathanael, behold an Israelite indeed ! a son of Israel, as the Syriac and Persic versions read; a true son of Jacobs; an honest, plain hearted man, like him; one that was an Israelite at heart; inwardly so; not one after the flesh only, but after the Spirit; (see Romans 2:28,29 1 Corinthians 10:18); and which was a rare thing at that time; and therefore a note of admiration is prefixed to it; for all were not Israel, that were of Israel; and indeed but a very few then: and so, lary b , a son of Israel, and rwmg lary , a perfect Israelite, are said of such who have regard to the articles of the Jewish faith, though not even of the seed of Israel: it is added, in whom there is no guile ; not that he was without sin; nor is this said of him; nor was he in such sense without guile, as Christ himself was; but guile was not a governing sin in him: the course of his life, and conversation, was with great integrity, and uprightness, and without any prevailing hypocrisy and deceit, either to God, or men. This Christ said to show how much such a character is approved by him; and that he knew the secrets of mens hearts, and the inward frames of their minds.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 43-51 - See the nature of true Christianity, it is following
Jesus; devotin ourselves to him, and treading in his steps. Observe the objectio Nathanael made. All who desire to profit by the word of God, mus beware of prejudices against places, or denominations of men. The should examine for themselves, and they will sometimes find good wher they looked for none. Many people are kept from the ways of religion by the unreasonable prejudices they conceive. The best way to remove fals notions of religion, is to make trial of it. In Nathanael there was n guile. His profession was not hypocritical. He was not a dissembler nor dishonest; he was a sound character, a really upright, godly man Christ knows what men are indeed. Does He know us? Let us desire to know him. Let us seek and pray to be Israelites indeed, in whom is n guile; truly Christians, approved of Christ himself. Some things weak imperfect, and sinful, are found in all, but hypocrisy belongs not to believer's character. Jesus witnessed what passed when Nathanael wa under the fig-tree. Probably he was then in fervent prayer, seeking direction as to the Hope and Consolation of Israel, where no human ey observed him. This showed him that our Lord knew the secrets of his heart. Through Christ we commune with, and benefit by the holy angels and things in heaven and things on earth are reconciled and unite together __________________________________________________________________
