Ver. 13. But I say unto you, that Elias is indeed come , etc..] Meaning John the Baptist, who in prophecy is designed by him. And they have done unto him whatsoever they listed ; (see Gill on Matthew 17:12); which words should be read in a parenthesis, as they are in the Vulgate Latin version; for what follows, as it is written of him , respects not what the Scribes and Pharisees, and the people of the Jews did to John at their pleasure; despising his ministry and message, rejecting the counsel of God delivered by him, and remaining impenitent and unbelieving, notwithstanding his powerful and awakening ministry, with many other things, which are no where written of him; but the words regard his coming, and the prophecies concerning him, and particularly, that under the name of Elijah, in ( Malachi 4:5) and which had had their accomplishment.
Matthew Henry Commentary
Verses 1-13 - Here is a prediction of the near approach Christ's kingdom. A glimps of that kingdom was given in the transfiguration of Christ. It is goo to be away from the world, and alone with Christ: and how good to be with Christ glorified in heaven with all the saints! But when it is well with us, we are apt not to care for others, and in the fulness of our enjoyments, we forget the many wants of our brethren. God own Jesus, and accepts him as his beloved Son, and is ready to accept us in him. Therefore we must own and accept him as our beloved Saviour, an must give up ourselves to be ruled by him. Christ does not leave the soul, when joys and comforts leave it. Jesus explained to the disciple the prophecy about Elias. This was very suitable to the ill usage of John Baptist.
