King James Bible - Psalms 69:12

They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.

    World English Bible

Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.

They that sat in the gate spoke against me: and they that drank
    wine made me their song.

    Webster's Bible Translation

They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.

    SEV Biblia, Chapter 69:12

Hablaban contra mí los que se sentaban a la puerta, y me zaherían en las canciones de los bebedores de sidra.

    Clarke's Bible Commentary - Psalms 68:12

Verse 12. They that sit in the
gate ] At the gates were the courts for public justice; there were complaints lodged, and causes heard. No doubt many vexatious complaints were made against the poor captives; and false accusations, through which they grievously suffered; so that, literally, they were often "obliged to restore that which they had not taken away." See ver. 4.

The song of the drunkards. ] These poor miserable people were exposed to all sorts of indignities. Though the conduct is base, the exultation over a fallen enemy is frequent. How miserable was this lot! Forsaken by friends, scorned by enemies, insulted by inferiors; the scoff of libertines, and the song of drunkards; besides hard travail of body, miserably lodged and fed; with the burning crown of all, a deep load of guilt upon the conscience. To such a life any death was preferable.

    Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 13-21 - Whatever deep waters of affliction or temptation we sink into, whateve floods of trouble or ungodly men seem ready to overwhelm us, let u persevere in prayer to our Lord to save us. The tokens of God's favou to us are enough to keep our spirits from sinking in the deepes outward troubles. If we think well of God, and continue to do so unde the greatest hardships, we need not fear but he will do well for us And if at any time we are called on to suffer reproach and shame, for Christ's sake, this may be our comfort, that he knows it. It bears har on one that knows the worth of a good name, to be oppressed with a ba one; but when we consider what a favour it is to be accounted worthy to suffer shame for the name of Jesus, we shall see that there is n reason why it should be heart-breaking to us. The sufferings of Chris were here particularly foretold, which proves the Scripture to be the word of God; and how exactly these predictions were fulfilled in Jesu Christ, which proves him to be the true Messiah. The vinegar and the gall given to him, were a faint emblem of that bitter cup which he drank up, that we might drink the cup of salvation. We cannot expec too little from men, miserable comforters are they all; nor can we expect too much from the God of all comfort and consolation.
