Verse 7. Thou hast put gladness in my heart ] Thou hast given my soul what it wanted and wished for. I find now a happiness which earthly things could not produce. I have peace of conscience, and joy in the Holy Ghost; such inward happiness as they cannot boast who have got the highest increase of corn and wine; those TWO THINGS in the abundance of which many suppose happiness to be found.
To corn and wine all the versions, except the Chaldee, add oil; for corn, wine, and oil, were considered the highest blessings of a temporal kind that man could possess.
Verses 6-8 - Wordly people inquire for good, not for the chief good; all they wan is outward good, present good, partial good, good meat, good drink, good trade, and a good estate; but what are all these worth? Any goo will serve the turn of most men, but a gracious soul will not be pu off so. Lord, let us have thy favour, and let us know that we have it we desire no more; let us be satisfied of thy loving-kindness, and wil be satisfied with it. Many inquire after happiness, but David had foun it. When God puts grace in the heart, he puts gladness in the heart Thus comforted, he pitied, but neither envied nor feared the mos prosperous sinner. He commits all his affairs to God, and is prepare to welcome his holy will. But salvation is in Christ alone; where wil those appear who despise him as their Mediator, and revile him in his disciples?
