John Gill's Bible Commentary Ver. 7. And when ye came unto this place , etc.] The borders of Moab, the wilderness before it, to which joined the plains they were now in; (see Numbers 21:13,20 Deuteronomy 2:26); Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle ; not together, but one after the other, and that very quickly; as soon almost as they had fought with the one, and conquered him, the other came out against them: and we smote them ; killed them and their armies, and the inhabitants of their countries; the history of which see in ( Numbers 21:23-35).
Matthew Henry Commentary
Verses 1-9 - Both former mercies, and fresh mercies, should be thought on by us a motives to obedience. The hearing ear, and seeing eye, and the understanding heart, are the gift of God. All that have them, have the from him. God gives not only food and raiment, but wealth and larg possessions, to many to whom he does not give grace. Many enjoy the gifts, who have not hearts to perceive the Giver, nor the true desig and use of the gifts. We are bound, in gratitude and interest, as wel as in duty and faithfulness, to keep the words of the covenant.
