King James Bible - Joshua 10:39

And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.

    World English Bible

He took it, with its king and all its cities. They struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining. As he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to its king; as he had done also to Libnah, and to its king.

    Douay-Rheims - Joshua 10:39

He took it and destroyed it: the king also thereof and all the towns
round about he destroyed with the edge of the sword: he left not in it any remains: as he had done to Hebron and Lebna and to their kings, so did he to Dabir and to the king thereof.

    Webster's Bible Translation

And he took it, and its king, and all its cities, and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were in them; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to its king; as he had done also to Libnah, and to its king.

    SEV Biblia, Chapter 10:39

    Clarke's Bible Commentary - Joshua 10:39

    Verse 39.
Destroyed all the souls] pn lk ta wmyrjyw vaiyacharimu eth col nephesh, they brought every person under an anathema; they either slew them or reduced them to a state of slavery. Is it reasonable to say those were slain who were found in arms, of the others they made slaves?

    John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 39. And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof , etc.] For this also was a
royal city, and had others dependent on it; and therefore must lie further from Hebron than before suggested; and indeed Burchard says it was five or six miles from it, and another writer f209 says ten miles: and they smote them with the edge of the sword ; the inhabitants of Debir, and the other cities adjacent to it; and utterly destroyed all the souls that [were] therein, he left none remaining ; and yet it seems this city recovered again, and was reinhabited, and after the death of Joshua was taken by Othniel, ( Judges 1:11-13); unless, as before observed, with respect to Hebron, there is there a more particular account of the taking of it at this time: as he had done to Hebron, so did he to Debir, and to the king thereof , as he had done also to Libnah and her king ; that is, slew them.

    Matthew Henry Commentary

    Verses 28-43 - Joshua made
speed in taking these cities. See what a great deal of wor may be done in a little time, if we will be diligent, and improve ou opportunities. God here showed his hatred of the idolatries and othe abominations of which the Canaanites had been guilty, and shows us ho great the provocation was, by the greatness of the destruction brough upon them. Here also was typified the destruction of all the enemies of the Lord Jesus, who, having slighted the riches of his grace, must for ever feel the weight of his wrath. The Lord fought for Israel. The could not have gotten the victory, if God had not undertaken the battle. We conquer when God fights for us; if he be for us, who can be against us __________________________________________________________________
