    John Gill's Bible Commentary

    Ver. 24. And they came to him, and awoke him , etc.] That is, the     disciples came from some part of the ship, to the hinder part of it, where Christ was asleep; and by their shrieks and cries, and repeated vociferations, awaked him out of sleep: saying, Master, Master, we perish . The Vulgate Latin, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions, only read master, without a repetition of the word, as in Matthew and Mark; but the Syriac and Persic versions repeat it, and render the words, our master, our master; (See Gill on Matthew 8:25). Then he rose, and rebuked the wind, and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and there was a calm ; (See Gill on Matthew 8:26).

    Matthew Henry Commentary

    Verses 22-40 - Those that put to     sea in a calm, even at Christ's word, must ye prepare for a storm, and for great peril in that storm. There is n relief for souls under a sense of guilt, and fear of wrath, but to go to Christ, and call him Master, and say, I am undone, if thou dost no help me. When our dangers are over, it becomes us to take to ourselve the shame of our own fears, and to give Christ the glory of ou deliverance. We may learn much out of this history concerning the worl of infernal, malignant spirits, which though not working now exactly in the same way as then, yet all must at all times carefully guar against. And these malignant spirits are very numerous. They have enmity to man and all his comforts. Those under Christ's government ar sweetly led with the bands of love; those under the devil's governmen are furiously driven. Oh what a comfort it is to the believer, that all the powers of darkness are under the control of the Lord Jesus! It is miracle of mercy, if those whom Satan possesses, are not brought to destruction and eternal ruin. Christ will not stay with those wh slight him; perhaps he may no more return to them, while others ar waiting for him, and glad to receive him.

    Rebuked. Compare the more detailed narrative of Mark, iv. 39, and see notes there. Wyc., blamed.

    The raging (kludwni). See on Jas. i. 6.

    Arose (diegerqeiv). Wrong. It is the word used just before, awoke. Lit., having been thoroughly awakened. Rev., correctly, he awoke. Luke is especially fond of compounds with dia.

    A calm. Matthew and Mark have "a great calm."

    8:24 {Master, Master} (epistata, epistata). See on Lu 5:5 for discussion. #Mr 4:38 has {Teacher} (didaskale), #Mt 8:25 has {Lord} (kurie). The repetition here shows the uneasiness of the disciples. {We perish} (apollumeqa). So in #Mr 4:38; Mt 8:25. Linear present middle indicative, we are perishing. {The raging of the water} (twi kludoni tou hudatos). kludwn, common Greek word, is a boisterous surge, a violent agitation. Here only in the N.T. save #Jas 1:6. kuma (#Mr 4:37) is the regular swell or wave. A {calm} (galene). Only in the parallels in the N.T., though common word. Here #Mr 4:39; Mt 8:26 add {great} (megale). {That} (hoti). this use of hoti as explanatory of the demonstrative pronoun houtos occurs in the parallels #Mr 4:36; Mt 8:27 and also in #Lu 4:36. It is almost result. {He commandeth} (epitassei). Peculiar to Luke.
