Clarke's Bible Commentary - Mark 1:21

Verse 21.
Capernaum] See Matt. iv. 13.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 21. And they went into Capernaum , etc..] Jesus and his four disciples he had just called, Simon and Andrew, James and John; though the Arabic and Persic versions read, he went; that is, Christ; and so Beza says it was read in a certain copy: and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue and taught ; that is, immediately, as soon as he entered the, city, it being then sabbath day; or, as soon as the sabbath day came, he went to the synagogue at Capernaum, and his disciples with him; where the people used to meet weekly to hear the law read, and to be instructed in divine things; which opportunity Christ laid hold on to preach the Gospel to them, and teach them things concerning the kingdom of God.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 14-22 -
Jesus began to preach in Galilee, after that John was put in prison. I some be laid aside, others shall be raised up, to carry on the sam work. Observe the great truths Christ preached. By repentance we giv glory to our Creator whom we have offended; by faith we give glory to our Redeemer who came to save us from our sins. Christ has joined thes two together, and let no man think to put them asunder. Christ put honour upon those who, though mean in this world, are diligent in their business and kind to one another. Industry and unity are good an pleasant, and the Lord Jesus commands a blessing on them. Those who Christ calls, must leave all to follow him; and by his grace he make them willing to do so. Not that we must needs go out of the world, but we must sit loose to the world; forsake every thing that is against ou duty to Christ, and that cannot be kept without hurt to our souls Jesus strictly kept the sabbath day, by applying himself unto, an abounding in the sabbath work, in order to which the sabbath rest wa appointed. There is much in the doctrine of Christ that is astonishing and the more we hear it, the more cause we see to admire it.

Robertson's NT Word Studies

1:21 {And taught} (edidasken). Inchoative imperfect, began to
teach as soon as he entered the synagogue in Capernaum on the sabbath. The synagogue in Capernaum afforded the best opening for the teaching of Jesus. He had now made Capernaum (Tell Hum) his headquarters after the rejection in Nazareth as explained in #Lu 4:16-31 and #Mt 4:13-16. The ruins of this synagogue have been discovered and there is even talk of restoring the building since the stones are in a good state of preservation. Jesus both taught (didaskw) and preached (kerussw) in the Jewish synagogues as opportunity was offered by the chief or leader of the synagogue (arcisunagwgos). The service consisted of prayer, praise, reading of scripture, and exposition by any rabbi or other competent person. Often Paul was invited to speak at such meetings. In #Lu 4:20 Jesus gave back the roll of Isaiah to the attendant or beadle (twi huperetei) whose business it was to bring out the precious manuscript and return it to its place. Jesus was a preacher of over a year when he began to teach in the Capernaum synagogue. His reputation had preceded him (#Lu 4:14).
