King James Bible - Deuteronomy 8:18

But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

    World English Bible

But you shall remember Yahweh your God, for it is he who gives you
power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as at this day.

    Douay-Rheims - Deuteronomy 8:18

But remember the Lord thy God, that he hath given thee
strength, that he might fulfil his covenant, concerning which he swore to thy fathers, as this present day sheweth.

    Webster's Bible Translation

But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee
power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he swore to thy fathers, as it is this day.

    Ps 127:1,2; 144:1 Pr 10:22 Ho 2:8

    SEV Biblia, Chapter 8:18

Antes te acordarás del SEÑOR tu Dios; porque él te da la potencia para hacer las riquezas, a fin de confirmar su pacto que juró a tus padres, como parece en este día.

    Clarke's Bible Commentary - Deuteronomy 8:18

    Verse 18. God-giveth thee
power to get wealth] Who among the rich and wealthy believes this saying? Who gives wisdom, understanding, skill, bodily strength, and health? Is it not God? And without these, how can wealth be acquired? Whose is providence? Who gives fertility to the earth? And who brings every proper purpose to a right issue? Is it not God? And without these also can wealth be acquired? No. Then the proposition in the text is self-evident: it is God that giveth power to get wealth, and to God the wealthy man must account for the manner in which he has expended the riches which God hath given him.

    John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 18. But thou shalt remember the
Lord thy God , etc.] That he was the author of their beings, the God of their lives and mercies; what great and good things he had done for them in Egypt, and in the wilderness; and particularly in putting them into the possession of such a fruitful country, abounding with all that heart could wish for: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth ; for though men may have seeming opportunities for getting wealth, may have capacities for the management of business for the acquisition of it, and may not be wanting in diligence and industry, yet may not attain it; it is the blessing of God that makes rich, and to that it should be imputed whenever it is enjoyed; (see <19C702> Psalm 127:2 Proverbs 10:22 Ecclesiastes 9:11 1 Chronicles 29:12) that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers , as [it is] this day ; that he would give the land of Canaan to their seed, and make them a rich and flourishing people, as they would be and were when possessed of the land, which is supposed throughout this discourse.

    Matthew Henry Commentary

    Verses 10-20 -
Moses directs to the duty of a prosperous condition. Let them alway remember their Benefactor. In everything we must give thanks. Mose arms them against the temptations of a prosperous condition. When me possess large estates, or are engaged in profitable business, they fin the temptation to pride, forgetfulness of God, and carnal-mindedness very strong; and they are anxious and troubled about many things. I this the believing poor have the advantage; they more easily perceiv their supplies coming from the Lord in answer to the prayer of faith and, strange as it may seem, they find less difficulty in simpl trusting him for daily bread. They taste a sweetness therein, which i generally unknown to the rich, while they are also freed from many of their temptations. Forget not God's former dealings with thee. Here is the great secret of Divine Providence. Infinite wisdom and goodness ar the source of all the changes and trials believers experience. Israe had many bitter trials, but it was "to do them good." Pride is natura to the human heart. Would one suppose that such a people, after their slavery at the brick-kilns, should need the thorns of the wilderness to humble them? But such is man! And they were proved that they might be humbled. None of us live a single week without giving proofs of ou weakness, folly, and depravity. To broken-hearted souls alone the Saviour is precious indeed. Nothing can render the most suitabl outward and inward trials effectual, but the power of the Spirit of God. See here how God's giving and our getting are reconciled, an apply it to spiritual wealth. All God's gifts are in pursuance of his promises. Moses repeats the warning he had often given of the fata consequences of forsaking God. Those who follow others in sin, wil follow them to destruction. If we do as sinners do, we must expect to fare as sinners fare __________________________________________________________________
