    VERSE (44) -
    Ge 49:10 Ps 110:3 Isa 11:10; 60:8

    SEV Biblia, Chapter 13:44

Y el sbado siguiente se junt casi toda la ciudad a oír la Palabra de Dios.

    Clarke's Bible Commentary - Acts 13:44

    Verse 44. The next
Sabbath day] The good news had spread far and wide, by means of the converted Jews and proselytes.

Almost the whole city] Jews, proselytes, and Gentiles, came together to hear ton logon tou qeou, this doctrine of God, this Divine teaching, by which so many of their kindred and acquaintance had become so wise and happy. It is not by public discourses merely that people are converted to God; but by the private teaching and godly conduct of those who have received the truth; for, as these are scattered throughout society, they are a leaven in every place.

    John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 44. And the next sabbath day , etc.] The same which is before called the sabbath between, which was between the first and tenth of Tisri, or between the beginning of the year, and the day of atonement: came almost the whole city together . The Syriac and Ethiopic versions leave out the word almost, and read, the whole city came together; some out of curiosity, having heard much said of these men and their doctrines, others to cavil and quarrel, and others from a true affection to the Gospel, and an earnest desire of knowing more of it, and of receiving more advantage from it: though the end in all was, to hear the word of God ; or of the Lord, as the Alexandrian copy; that is, the doctrine of the Gospel, which comes from God, and, concerns the Lord Jesus Christ, his person, offices, grace, and righteousness.

    Matthew Henry Commentary

    Verses 42-52 - The
Jews opposed the doctrine the apostles preached; and when the could find no objection, they blasphemed Christ and his gospel Commonly those who begin with contradicting, end with blaspheming. But when adversaries of Christ's cause are daring, its advocates should be the bolder. And while many judge themselves unworthy of eternal life others, who appear less likely, desire to hear more of the glad tiding of salvation. This is according to what was foretold in the Ol Testament. What light, what power, what a treasure does this gospe bring with it! How excellent are its truths, its precepts, it promises! Those came to Christ whom the Father drew, and to whom the Spirit made the gospel call effectual, Ro 8:30. As many as wer disposed to eternal life, as many as had concern about their eterna state, and aimed to make sure of eternal life, believed in Christ, i whom God has treasured up that life, and who is the only Way to it; an it was the grace of God that wrought it in them. It is good to se honourable women devout; the less they have to do in the world, the more they should do for their own souls, and the souls of others: but it is sad, when, under colour of devotion to God, they try to sho hatred to Christ. And the more we relish the comforts an encouragements we meet with in the power of godliness, and the fulle our hearts are of them, the better prepared we are to face difficultie in the profession of godliness __________________________________________________________________

    Robertson's NT Word Studies

    13:44 {The next
Sabbath} (twi ercomenwi sabbatwi). Locative case, on the coming (ercomenwi, present middle participle of ercomai) Sabbath. So the best MSS., though some have ecomen"i (present middle participle of ecw in sense of near, bordering, following as in #Lu 13:33; Ac 29:15). {Almost} (scedon). Old word, but in N.T. only here, #Ac 19:26; Heb 9:22. {Was gathered together} (sunecqe). First aorist (effective) passive indicative of sunagw, old and common verb. The "whole city" could hardly all gather in the synagogue. Perhaps Paul spoke in the synagogue and Barnabas to the overflow outside (see verse #46). It was an eager and earnest gathering "to hear (akousai, first aorist active infinitive of purpose) the word of God" and a great opportunity for Paul and Barnabas. The Codex Bezae has it "to hear Paul." It was the new preacher (Paul) that drew the big crowd. It was a crowd such as will later hang on the words of John Wesley and George Whitfield when they preach Jesus Christ.
