SEV Biblia, Chapter 13:5

Y llegados a Salamina, anunciaban la palabra de Dios en las sinagogas de los judíos; y tenían tambin a Juan como asistente.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Acts 13:5

Verse 5. Salamis] The capital of the
island of Cyprus; afterwards called Constantia, and now Salina, situated on the eastern part of the island.

They preached the word of God] ton logon, The doctrine of God, the Christian religion, emphatically so called.

They had also John to their minister.] This was John Mark, of whom we heard, chap. xii. 25; for their minister, uphrethn, to assist them in minor offices, as deacon or servant, that they might give themselves wholly to the doctrine of the Lord.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 4-13 - Satan is in a special manner busy with great men and men in power, to keep them from being religious, for their example will influence many Saul is here for the first time called Paul, and never after Saul. Sau was his name as he was a Hebrew; Paul was his name as he was a citize of Rome. Under the direct influence of the Holy Ghost, he gave Elyma his true character, but not in passion. A fulness of deceit an mischief together, make a man indeed a child of the devil. And thos who are enemies to the doctrine of Jesus, are enemies to all righteousness; for in it all righteousness is fulfilled. The ways of the Lord Jesus are the only right ways to heaven and happiness. Ther are many who not only wander from these ways themselves, but set other against these ways. They commonly are so hardened, that they will no cease to do evil. The proconsul was astonished at the force of the doctrine upon his own heart and conscience, and at the power of God by which it was confirmed. The doctrine of Christ astonishes; and the mor we know of it, the more reason we shall see to wonder at it. Those wh put their hand to the plough and look back, are not fit for the kingdo of God. Those who are not prepared to face opposition, and to endur hardship, are not fitted for the work of the ministry.

Vincent's NT Word Studies

5. Synagogues. The plural implies that the
Jews were numerous in Salamis. Augustus, according to Josephus, made Herod the Great a present of half the revenue of the copper mines of Cyprus, so that numerous Jewish families would be settled in the island. In the reign of Trajan, upon the breaking out of a Jewish insurrection, the whole island fell into the hands of the Jews, and became a rallying-point for the revolt. It is said that two hundred and forty thousand of the native population were sacrificed to the fury of the insurgents. When the rebellion was extinguished, the Jews were forbidden thenceforth, on pain of death, to set foot on the island.

Minister (uphrethn). Better, as Rev., attendant. See on Matt. v. 25.

Robertson's NT Word Studies

13:5 {Proclaimed} (kateggellon). Imperfect active of kataggellw, inchoative, began to proclaim. this was Paul's rule of procedure, "to the Jew first" (#Ro 1:16; Ac 13:46; 17:2; 18:4,19; 19:8). {They had also} (eicon de kai). Imperfect active, descriptive. {As their attendant} (hupereten). Literally, "under-rower" (hupo, eretes) in the trireme. Probably here minister (cazzan) or assistant in the synagogue as in #Lu 4:20. Cf. #Mt 5:25. It is not clear what John Mark did, though he was evidently selected by Barnabas as his cousin. He may have helped in the baptizing. There were probably others also in the company (verse #13). The "also" may mean that Mark did some preaching. Barnabas was probably the leader in the work in these Jewish synagogues.
