    Verse 41. The     Jews then murmured] Because the whole of his discourse event to prove that he was infinitely greater than Moses; and that he alone could give present peace and eternal glory to men.

    John Gill's Bible Commentary

    Ver. 41. The     Jews then murmured at him , etc.] When they found that he spoke of himself as the true bread, the bread of God, and bread of life, and as descending from heaven: and which was to be fed upon in a spiritual manner by faith, which they were ignorant of, and had no desire unto: and thus being disappointed of the delicious corporeal food they expected, they grew uneasy, and displeased, because he said I am the bread which came down from heaven ; for though, as yet, he had not said this in so many words, and in this direct form, as afterwards, in ( John 6:51); yet he had said what amounted to it, and which might be easily gathered from ( John 6:35,) ( John 6:38). The Vulgate Latin reads, I am the living bread; and the Persic version, I am the bread of life. And this last renders the first clause mocked at him.

    Matthew Henry Commentary

    Verses 36-46 - The discovery of their guilt,     danger, and remedy, by the teaching of the Holy Spirit, makes men willing and glad to come, and to give u every thing which hinders applying to him for salvation. The Father' will is, that not one of those who were given to the Son, should be rejected or lost by him. No one will come, till Divine grace ha subdued, and in part changed his heart; therefore no one who comes wil ever be cast out. The gospel finds none willing to be saved in the humbling, holy manner, made known therein; but God draws with his wor and the Holy Ghost; and man's duty is to hear and learn; that is to say, to receive the grace offered, and consent to the promise. None ha seen the Father but his beloved Son; and the Jews must expect to be taught by his inward power upon their minds, and by his word, and the ministers whom he sent among them.

    41. Then (oun). Rev., rightly, therefore: because of His     words.

    Murmured (eggoguzon). See on Jude 16, and compare 1 Corinthians x. 10; Philip. ii. 14. The word is constantly used in the Septuagint of the murmuring of Israel in the wilderness. Wyc., grudged of Him. So Chaucer, "Judas grucched agens the Maudeleyn whan sche anoynted the hed of oure Lord" ("Parson's Tale"); and Shakespeare,

    "Served Without or grudge or grumbling." "Tempest" i., 2, 249.

    At Him (peri autou). Implying that they addressed their remonstrances to Him. But peri means about or concerning. So Rev., properly, concerning.
