And he sent Peter and John , etc.] That is, Jesus sent them, as the Syriac, Persic, and Ethiopic versions express it; these were two favourite disciples of Christ, and were now sent by him from Bethany to Jerusalem: saying, go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat ; it together; so servants used to be sent, to go and prepare the passover for their masters; (see Gill on Matthew 26:17).
Matthew Henry Commentary
Verses 7-18 - Christ kept the ordinances of the law, particularly that of the passover, to teach us to observe his gospel institutions, and most of all that of the Lord's supper. Those who go upon Christ's word, nee not fear disappointment. According to the orders given them, the disciples got all ready for the passover. Jesus bids this passove welcome. He desired it, though he knew his sufferings would follow because it was in order to his Father's glory and man's redemption. He takes his leave of all passovers, signifying thereby his doing away all the ordinances of the ceremonial law, of which the passover was one of the earliest and chief. That type was laid aside, because now in the kingdom of God the substance was come.

Robertson's NT Word Studies
22:8 {Peter and John} (petron kai iwanen). #Mr 14:13 has only "two" while #Mt 26:17 makes the disciples take the initiative. The word passover in this context is used either of the meal, the feast day, the whole period (including the unleavened bread). "Eat the passover" can refer to the meal as here or to the whole period of celebration (#Joh 18:28).
