Y l se apart de ellos como a un tiro de piedra; y puesto de rodillas or,

    John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 41. And he was withdrawn from them , etc.] That is, from the
three disciples, Peter, James, and John, whom he took along with him, leaving the rest at some further distance; and from these he removed, about a stone's cast ; fifty, or sixty feet from the place where they were: and kneeled down and prayed ; the following prayer.

    Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 39-46 - Every description which the
evangelists give of the state of mind in which our Lord entered upon this conflict, proves the tremendous natur of the assault, and the perfect foreknowledge of its terrors possesse by the meek and lowly Jesus. Here are three things not in the othe evangelists. 1. When Christ was in his agony, there appeared to him a angel from heaven, strengthening him. It was a part of his humiliatio that he was thus strengthened by a ministering spirit. 2. Being in agony, he prayed more earnestly. Prayer, though never out of season, is in a special manner seasonable when we are in an agony. 3. In thi agony his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down. Thi showed the travail of his soul. We should pray also to be enabled to resist unto the shedding of our blood, striving against sin, if eve called to it. When next you dwell in imagination upon the delights of some favourite sin, think of its effects as you behold them here! Se its fearful effects in the garden of Gethsemane, and desire, by the help of God, deeply to hate and to forsake that enemy, to ranso sinners from whom the Redeemer prayed, agonized, and bled.

    Vincent's NT Word Studies

    41. Was withdrawn (apespasqh). The Vulgate has avulsus est, "he was torn away," as by an inward urgency. Godet
adopts this view, and so, apparently, Wyc., he was taken away. Meyer inclines to it; De Wette decidedly rejects it. Compare Acts xxi. 1.

    Prayed. Imperfect, began to pray.

    Robertson's NT Word Studies

22:41 {About a stone's throw} (hwsei liqou bolen). Accusative of extent of space. Luke does not tell of leaving eight disciples by the entrance to Gethsemane nor about taking Peter, James, and John further in with him. {Kneeled down} (qeis ta gonata). Second aorist active participle from tiqemi. #Mr 14:35 says "fell on the ground" and #Mt 26:39 "fell on his face." All could be true at different moments. {Prayed} (proseuceto). Imperfect middle, was praying, kept on praying.
